Patchwork

When I was young my grandma took me to a women’s institute quilt exhibition, there was a partially blind lady with us. My grandma asked me to describe the quilt to her. How could I explain all the intricacies and details, the subtleties of the contrast stitching, the impressive size that filled the whole wall, all these descriptions could not translate the optical illusions of shapes placed together in a certain way on the eye, one triangle plus one square can give such an effect... That day I felt a failure to her and at the same time I felt I was looking at the quilt with new eyes.
